Every time a candle is lit your message of encouragement is reimagined.

Business gifting is an art and a science. Choosing a carefully curated gift will make the difference in building stronger relationships and generating more business. Get it wrong, and it’ll cost your business. The amount of money spent will be wasteful, and a non-strategic thoughtless spend can cause your relationships to fracture and develop cracks where they didn’t need to have cracks. Not to mention the billions of dollars spent by businesses only for gifts to be thrown away by recipients.

The U.S. business gift industry size varies by opinion, yet the numbers are large, cited annually in upward figures of $125 billion and still growing. The cost of getting it wrong sees a huge amount of money needlessly thrown away, not to mention the business opportunities lost. Gifting has grown throughout 2020 as we see the rise in people being separated, teams unable to get together, business cultures diminished, businesses struggling to connect with their clients in remote ways, and brands struggling in product launches to create connections and engagement. A thoughtfully curated gift, however, can bridge the gap, and goes a long way in supporting engagement and building loyalty and commitment.

When you give a gift that is customized to the recipient you make the gift all about them, and less about you. You change the relationship by focusing on the recipient and demonstrating your thoughtfulness. The personalized gifting market in the consumer world has been growing rapidly and in 2020 reached $25.8 billion, and is projected to reach $43.3 billion by 2027. The trend of personalized and customized gifts has now flowed into the business gifting industry and more and more businesses are actively choosing this when sending gifts.

One example of a thoughtful item in your gift is a candle, but not just any old candle:

  • Candles fit beautifully into employee, partner, and client gifts. They act as a reminder that it only takes one person to illuminate and spread light.

  • They can turn a gloomy desk into a bright space. They can bring a sense of calm, and they can come with a message of encouragement and inspiration, and each time it is lit that message is reimagined.

  • Source clean non-toxic materials, hand poured, soy or beeswax based and ethically made. If you are choosing a scented candle, consider your recipients first - not everyone likes scent. After this make sure the scents are free from chemicals and as pure as you can find. Breathing in toxic air is not pleasant for any body.

  • Veronique Gabai’s candle set of two, and the Taja Collection are both Birch Cove favorites.

When you are curating your business gifts, this is how you curate for the most impact:

  1. What is your intention for giving a gift?

  2. How do you want your recipients to feel?

  3. Who are your recipients, what does your relationship mean, and what sentiment do you want to reinforce or remind them of?

  4. What does your recipient do, what is their role, what do you know about their likes, dislikes? How can you incorporate these aspects into your gift?

  5. What colors, styles, textures, shapes, and scents reinforce your intention and goals?

  6. How can you customize your gift to make it about your recipient? Such as bringing your recipient’s name into their gift.

  7. What gifts can you find that will last and create experiences, moments, or memories for recipients?

  8. If your gift is consumable, what else can you pair with it that will last beyond the moment of it being consumed?

  9. How can you create your gift to be about the recipient as well as their family, friends, or colleagues if they choose?

  10. Choose materials and items thoughtfully, source exceptional quality, discover local markets, and choose items that come with sustainable people and planet practices, discover give-back aspects, minority owned, and non-commodity items.

No matter what, remember that the existing relationships your business has are the most treasured for your business to be alive and thrive. Your gift reflects what you, and your business, truly feel and think about your recipients. It is a gift, not a promotional commercial for your business - if it is then you must approach curating your item differently, for the intention is very different.

Cheap, cheerful, and commodity based gifts will send that message. Remember, a poorly chosen gift that is swiftly orchestrated without thought will have that feel and can do more damage to a relationship than good.
